Engagement Beyond Academics

Being in New York City shapes Columbia’s identity. The university values students who are aware of the world around them and who connect their academic interests to real-world issues. This can show up through civic engagement, social impact initiatives, cultural exploration, research tied to global problems, or meaningful community involvement.

Columbia looks for students who will actively participate in its intellectual and social life. There is no published average GPA, but Columbia students are academically exceptional. Nearly all admitted students rank near the top of their high school classes, with a large majority graduating in the top 10 percent.

Standardized testing is currently optional. For students who choose to submit scores, the middle 50 percent of admitted applicants typically score in the 1510–1560 range on the SAT or 35–36 on the ACT. Strong scores can enhance an application, but they are not required for consideration.

Columbia Supplemental Essays

Columbia’s supplements are central to the application and are designed to assess curiosity, perspective, and fit. Prompts typically focus on intellectual influences, personal background, challenges you’ve faced, your academic interests, and why Columbia appeals to you.

Successful essays are specific, thoughtful, and clearly tied to Columbia’s academic culture. Rather than general praise, strong responses explain how your interests connect to Columbia’s Core Curriculum, faculty, programs, or location.

Applying Early Decision can be beneficial if Columbia is your clear first choice and you are ready to commit. It signals strong interest and alignment with the university.

Reading and learning beyond school can significantly strengthen your application. Independent exploration of books, articles, research, or creative work related to your interests often provides excellent material for essays.

Building a strong relationship with your school counselor is also important. Their recommendation and school context help Columbia understand your academic environment and trajectory.
