Berkeley is academically demanding. Admissions officers look for students who have challenged themselves with rigorous coursework such as AP, IB, or honors classes and performed well in fast-paced environments. Success at Berkeley requires independence and resilience, and your transcript should show that you’re prepared for that level of intensity.

Berkeley values students who have made purposeful choices outside the classroom. Leadership is defined by action, not titles. Whether you started a project, conducted research, advocated for change, mentored others, or balanced work with school responsibilities, admissions officers want to see initiative and tangible impact.

Clear Intellectual Direction

You don’t need a fixed career plan, but strong applicants show focus. Berkeley looks for students whose academic interests are intentional and supported by action—through coursework, research, internships, competitions, or sustained extracurricular involvement. Your application should make it clear why your chosen field matters to you.

Berkeley’s holistic review gives real weight to personal context. This includes your background, obstacles you’ve faced, and how those experiences shaped your values. Admitted Berkeley students typically earn GPAs in the 3.9–4.0 range and take the most challenging courses available at their schools.

UC Berkeley is test-free. SAT and ACT scores are not considered at any stage of the admissions process, even if submitted. Academic evaluation is based on coursework, grades, extracurricular impact, and essays.

All applicants must apply through the UC Application, which follows a format different from the Common App.

UC Berkeley does not offer Early Action or Early Decision. All applicants are reviewed in the same round, with decisions typically released in late March.

UC Berkeley does not accept letters of recommendation. Teacher or counselor letters will not be reviewed, even if submitted. Applicants should focus entirely on the required components of the UC Application.

Berkeley evaluates activities through the lens of initiative, responsibility, and impact. Leadership can take many forms, including family responsibilities, part-time work, community involvement, or academic projects.

The UC Application requires four essays selected from eight prompts. These responses are sent to all UC campuses, so avoid referencing Berkeley specifically unless you are applying only to Berkeley.
