The "UC GPA" and Rigor

UCLA is heavily focused on your grades from 10th and 11th grade. They recalculate your GPA using a specific UC formula that caps extra points for Honors/APs.

UCLA's holistic review heavily weighs your personal context. They value students who have overcome educational or personal barriers and maximized the resources available to them.

Test-Blind (Test-Free): UCLA will *not* consider SAT or ACT scores for admissions decisions or scholarship awarding. Do not rely on tests to save a weak GPA.

UC Application Window: October 1 – November 30. (There is no Early Action or Early Decision).

No Letters of Recommendation required (unless specifically requested later via a supplemental review, or for specialized Arts programs).

Quality over quantity. UCLA wants to see your responsibilities — this includes traditional clubs, but they equally value part-time jobs, family responsibilities, and independent research.

The PIQs are not creative writing essays; they are academic interviews in written form. Be direct, use "I" statements, and clearly state your impact and what you learned.

Focus on 10th and 11th Grade

Because of the UC GPA calculation, your sophomore and junior year grades are the absolute most critical component of your application.

Apply Widely in the UC System

Because there is no Early Action advantage, apply to multiple UCs using the same application to maximize your chances in this highly unpredictable system.
